The Birth of a Legend
Harley Davidson sprang to life in 1901 when at the age of 21; William S. Harley laid out a set of blue prints depicting a design for an engine that would fit into a bicycle frame.

Three years later now 23, William S Harley teemed up with Arthur Davidson and introduced the first production Harley Davidson Motorcycle.

The first Harley Davidson was built in a wooden 10’x15’ shed with the words Harley Davidson Motor Company hand painted on the door. The bike was built for racing and had a 3-1/2 bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke motor

The First Harley Davidson Sold
Although the year that the first production Harley Davidson motorcycle was built is not for sure, the first production Harley Davidson sold was in 1903 and was most likely bought by Henry Meyer a close friend and school yard pall of William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson.

That same year Walter Davidson quits his job in Kansas and joins his brother Arthur and their friend William on their efforts to produce motorcycles. C.H. Lang of Chicago, Ill., opens the first Harley Davidson dealership and sells one of the first three production Harley Davidson’s that were built.
